Talismans, Amulets and Charms: Meaning and How to Choose

How a talisman differs from an amulet and a charm, what kinds exist and how to choose yours.

Since the earliest times people carried special objects with them, believing they protect from misfortune and attract luck. Talismans, amulets and charms exist in every culture. Our reference of charms gathers the most well-known of them with an explanation of their meaning — and you can open it for free.

Talisman, amulet, charm — what's the difference

These words are close, but there are shades. A charm more often protects — it "guards" against evil and the evil eye (for example, a red thread, the evil eye). An amulet is a personal object worn for protection and luck (a pouch, a rune). A talisman usually attracts something desired — luck, love, prosperity (a horseshoe, a coin). In practice the boundaries are blurred, and a single object can play all three roles.

The most well-known charms

In the reference you will find the horseshoe — a symbol of luck and home protection; the evil eye (nazar) — protection from envy; the pentagram — a sign of the harmony of the elements; the Norse Algiz rune — a charm against dangers; a pouch, a red thread, a bell and an abundance pouch. Each comes with its meaning and advice on use.

How to choose your charm

Choose by task and by response. If protection from others' envy matters — the evil eye or a red thread will suit. For the home — a horseshoe over the door or a bell. For prosperity — an abundance pouch. Listen to yourself: "your" charm usually appeals at once and evokes a pleasant feeling.

How to wear and care for it

Personal charms (a thread, a rune, a pouch) are worn close to the body. Home charms (a horseshoe, a bell) are placed by the entrance or in a room. Treat the charm with respect, cleanse it now and then — for example, hold it under running water or leave it on the windowsill in moonlight. If a charm is lost or cracks, it is believed to have "served its time" and taken the blow for you.

What to remember

A charm is a symbol of your intention and calm, not a guarantee. It helps you feel more confident and reminds you of a good attitude. White magic spells and rites will help reinforce it.

Open the talismans and charms and choose yours.

Remember: white magic is, above all, good intentions and faith in the best. No spell or charm replaces your own efforts, but it can be a support and tune you to the right mood. Do not use practices to harm others — good returns as good.
