Tarot of Marseille (Conver)

A reference example of the Tarot of Marseille — a tradition that took shape in France and Italy and shaped the look of classic decks for centuries. This version was produced by the craftsman Nicolas Conver in Marseille in 1760 using woodcut printing with stencil colouring. Conver's recognisable rendering of the Major Arcana became canonical: it was the very pattern that 19th-century occultists relied on when building the esoteric system of Tarot. The spare, symbolic images of the Marseille tradition are still valued for their purity and depth. All 22 Major Arcana of the deck are shown here.
