The Celtic Cross is the most famous and detailed Tarot spread. Ten cards reveal a situation so deeply that both beginners and professionals use it. You can try it right now: the Celtic Cross online is free and needs no registration.
The structure of the spread
The ten positions fall into two parts: the βcrossβ (the first six cards) and the βstaffβ (the last four). The cross describes the situation itself: the heart of the question, the main challenge, the past, the future, the conscious goal and near events. The staff is the context: yourself, your environment, hopes and fears, and the outcome.
What the positions mean
1 β the heart of the question. 2 β the challenge that crosses the situation. 3 β the past, the roots. 4 β the near future. 5 β the conscious goal. 6 β what is approaching. 7 β you and your stance. 8 β the environment and others' influence. 9 β your hopes and fears (often the same card). 10 β the outcome, where it all leads.
The reading order
Start with the central pair: the heart (1) and the challenge (2) set the theme. Then move along the time axis: past (3), future (4), goal (5), near future (6). After that read the staff bottom to top: you (7), environment (8), hopes and fears (9) and, finally, the outcome (10). Link the cards together β the outcome card should logically follow from the previous ones.
