Tarot combinations: compare two cards

Choose two cards you have already drawn from the 22 Major Arcana. Read an editorial comparison of their themes, an alternative and a reflection question.

Initial coverage: 32 of 231 distinct pairs of 22 Major Arcana, both cards upright. No Minor Arcana or reversed pair analysis yet. Missing combinations are named as missing, never assembled from generic card paragraphs.

Use cards already drawn from your own deck. This tool draws nothing, predicts no events and does not establish another person’s feelings. Do not use it for medical, financial or legal decisions.

Positions label your two slots. Context adds a separate reflection prompt; it does not generate a new authored interpretation. The shared pair text does not change when the two slots are swapped.

Three worked Tarot combinations

The Fool + The Magician

The Fool suggests an open beginning; the Magician, gathered skills and tools. Together they contrast willingness to try with the ability to give a trial some form: a free idea becomes a small concrete action. Neither cancels the other; spontaneity does not establish readiness.

Alternative

The pair can also describe two roles in a creative task: proposing something unfamiliar and helping give it form. It does not identify actual people without further context.

Which part of the idea can an existing skill test, and what still needs to be learned?

The Fool Β· The Magician

The Empress + The Emperor

The Empress highlights care and conditions for growth; the Emperor, order and responsibility. They can be compared as supporting a living process and setting its boundaries. Care without boundaries and order without attention to needs are different imbalances; the pair does not assign roles by gender or age.

Alternative

Both can describe one task: creating an environment where clear rules support care instead of replacing it.

Which boundary supports care, and which exists only for control?

The Empress Β· The Emperor

The Moon + The Sun

The Moon concerns hazy impressions; the Sun, clarity and open expression. The pair compares an assumption with what has become observable. It does not promise that a secret will be revealed: the useful distinction is between new information and an idea that has merely begun to feel more convincing.

Alternative

Both may describe ways of telling the same experience: an ambiguous, imaginative account beside a direct, understandable one.

Which specific clarification distinguishes your present understanding from an earlier guess?

The Moon Β· The Sun

How to read the comparison

An editorial comparison of symbolic themes in the Predictor individual-card reference, associated on this site with the Rider–Waite–Smith system. This is not a translation of a historical treatise or a universal rule of a tradition. The existing Rider–Waite–Smith deck reference.

We compare the shared theme and the difference between two entries, then offer an alternative and a question. Pair paragraphs were written separately; individual meanings are shown separately and linked to their source. The two-card text is for upright symbols without a fixed story about past or future.

How is a combination different from a spread?

A combination compares two already selected symbols. A spread assigns positions before drawing and can contain more cards. Here the optional position labels help you state your own framework; the tool neither draws a spread nor claims that one interpretation is uniquely correct.
